REMEMBERING CANON  POWER.

This week we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the death of Canon Power. Maurice Power was born in Cromhill, Kilteely in 1832. Educated in St. Patrick’s College, Thurles and Maynooth he was ordained priest in 1859. He served in the parishes of Ballinahinch, Anacarty and Templemore before coming to Emly in 1877. He was firstly Administrator of Emly as the parish priest, Fr. Rafter, was in bad health. Fr Rafter resigned in 1886 and Fr. Power then became parish priest.

In his time in Emly Canon Power oversaw the building of our beautiful Church of St. Ailbe, two parochial houses, our national school and houses for teachers. He also encouraged and played a big part in the development of Emly creamery. Canon Power was instrumental in bringing about the purchase of parishioner’s holdings. He also negotiated the purchase of Emly village, on the Considine Estate.

Canon Power died on 27th March 1914 and was buried on March 30th.
