GOSPEL  REFLECTION

The Gospel today tells us that the greatest commandment is love. In a speech given at the World Congress of the Lay Apostolate in October 1957, Giovanni Battista Montini (later Pope Paul VI), who was beatified last Sunday, explained that ‘the secret of the lay apostolate is to know how to love … those nearby and those afar; love our own country and those of others; love our friends and our enemies; love Catholics, Protestants, Anglicans, the indifferent; love Muslims, pagans, atheists … love our own times, our modern civilisation, techniques, art, sport, our world … let us love it with the heart of Christ
