“We give you thanks, Lord, for the gift of our lives and for our parents who brought us to birth and reared us in the best ways they could. We pray for all expectant mothers and their unborn babies. In a special way we pray for mothers who are experiencing difficulties in their pregnancies; may they and their babies be healthy and safe.

The  8th  Amendment

This is what the 8th Amendment to the Constitution, passed by referendum in 1983 says:

“The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.”
