Sponsors (Godparents) must be:

[a] Over 16 years of age;

[b] Confirmed;

[c] Practising Catholics, who can give their godchild

the necessary good example of faithful Christian

Note:  There is a special ceremony for a child who is adopted, and for one who was baptized in an emergency. Both ceremonies welcome the child into the Church community.

Pope Francis, in Croke Park last August, urged parents to have their children baptized in the first month or two after birth,  and not to postpone it.
