Fatima:  100  Years On

Pope Francis visits Fatima this weekend, to mark  the centenary of the first Apparition there of Our Lady, 13th May 1917 : the world was at war. The Pope will canonize Francisco and Jacinta Marto, two of the visionaries. Francisco was 9 years old and Jacinta was barely 7 years of age at the time of the 6 apparitions. A few years later they died of the ‘flu pandemic that swept across Europe at the end of World War I.

Their cousin, Lucia dos Santos was 10 years old in May 1917. She became a Carmelite nun and lived to the age of 97, dying in 2005. These three show us that primary-school children are capable of true holiness and can teach us how to live in Gospel ways – as Jesus himself stated.
