A  Mighty  First  Step

Pope Francis was in Abu Dhabi for five days this past week. It is the first time a Pope has set foot on the Arabian Peninsula,  in a country where Muslims  are dominant. While there, he celebrated an open-air Mass with 100,000 Catholics (mostly immigrants) – the first time such an event occurred on Arab soil.

The Pope was invited to Abu Dhabi by the Grand Imam of Sunni Islam to attend a conference of the leaders of several major religions. Having conversed and prayed together across the days, Pope Francis and the Grand Imam declared:                                                                           “Faith leads a believer to see in the other a brother or sister to be supported and loved.”

It took courage for the Grand Imam to invite the Pope. It took courage for Francis to go. Courage combined with Faith can build justice and peace
